Yesterday afternoon Luc Bourdon (21 year old defensive prospect for the Vancouver Canucks) died tragically in a motorcycle accident. It’s very unfortunate anytime someone passes away at such a young age, but sometimes when it happens to an athlete it gives those of us who follow sports a wakeup call. A tragic death of a young player (who had a bright future and had represented our country at two World Junior Championships) makes us as sports fans take a step back and realize what is really important.
Something so sad and unfortunate can remind all of us that hockey is nothing more than a game. Sure Luc Bourdon was a talented hockey player, but more importantly he was a son, brother, cousin, nephew to his family. That is truly what matters in life. The Bourdon family lost someone special to them. As a society we tend to get wrapped up in the lives of athletes and celebrities, when what is really important is the people that we love and care for in our own lives. Sometimes we need a reminder that athletes are people just like us and that no “game” is more important than life itself.
So thoughts and prayers of course go out to the Bourdon family and to all families who have lost someone so young. It’s incumbent upon all of us to take time to tell everyone in our family how much they mean to us and how much we love them. A tragic accident like this reminds us that you never know when it will be your last chance to tell someone you love them.
